Author Biography

Gayle Wald is a professor of English at The George Washington University, where she teaches courses on African American literature, popular music, and U.S. culture. In addition to Shout, Sister, Shout! , Professor Wald is the author of Crossing the Line: Racial Passing in 20th -Century U.S. Literature and Culture (Duke University Press, 2000), as well as numerous essays on music, culture, and literature. She first began writing about music while working on a Ph.D. in English at Princeton University . Raised in Philadelphia and its suburbs, she resides in Washington , DC .
